The past year marked a fundamental transition for Bread. What began as an experiment in decentralized worker-owned economic infrastructure has grown into a living ecosystem one rooted in Dual Power, Mutual Aid, Economic Democracy, and Transparent Governance.
We started 2025 as a solidarity mechanism. →
We end it as a global solidarity cooperative.
This post is both a reflection on what we’ve built together over the last year and a signal of where we’re heading next: toward a shared, composable Solidarity Stack a suite of contracts and applications designed for everyday people, built and battle-tested on Gnosis.
The Foundation: Building Liquidity & Public Presence
The first phase of 2025 focused on grounding the BREAD token in real economic activity. We released detailed guides on liquidity provision, shifting participation from passive holding to active, collective stewardship. This laid the groundwork for BREAD to function not just as a token, but as a coordination mechanism for solidarity.
This phase culminated in our presence at ETH Berlin during Berlin Blockchain Week where we hosted a launch event that was intentionally more than networking. It became a moment of collective action raising thousands of dollars in direct aid for Gaza.
Industry leaders, including Vitalik Buterin, passed through. But more importantly, so did builders, organizers, and community members aligned with the same question we were asking:
Building Adaptive Resilience
In June 2025, Bread led and incubated the second Breadchain pop-up at Funding the Commons in Berlin. Across five thematic tracks, we explored what a Web3 future beyond speculation and extraction could look likeone grounded in community, ecology, labor, and humanity.
This gathering wasn’t just discursive. It was a moment of synthesis. The conversations and relationships formed there directly shaped the next phase of Bread’s evolution and served as the soft launch of our rebrand.
From “Chain” to Cooperative
As our international community expanded, so did the clarity that the name Breadchain no longer reflected who we were becoming. Community feedback was consistent: the name felt too technical, too infrastructural, and too removed from the people we aim to serve.
We listened.
At Funding the Commons in June, we formally announced the transition from Breadchain to Bread Cooperative. This moment was intentional. The rebrand was not unveiled in isolation, but in a space dedicated to commons funding, public goods, and collective governance alongside the very communities this work is meant to serve.
The shift to Bread Cooperative was not cosmetic. It reflected a deeper organizational evolution in how we understand ownership, sustainability, and responsibility. It signaled a move away from protocol-first framing toward a people-first cooperative identity, grounded in shared economic agency rather than abstract infrastructure.
This transition coincided with a major technical migration to Gnosis Chain and sDAI. Our original crowdstaking application evolved into what is now the BREAD Solidarity Fund a name that better captures its role as a community-owned coordination mechanism rather than a narrowly defined financial product.
This transition and the stability it enabled would not have been possible without the support and alignment of GnosisDAO and the broader Gnosis ecosystem, which continues to demonstrate how onchain infrastructure can remain closely connected to real-world needs.

Gas Killer, incubated within Bread Cooperative, who received a Gitcoin Grant 24 demonstrating how infrastructure tooling can benefit Ethereum by cutting Ethereum mainnet gas costs for apps.

We partnered with Gardens to integrate Conviction Voting, aligning treasury decisions with long-term community commitment rather than short-term majorities.

We launched the Bread Co-op Reading Group, grounding our technical work in political economy and movement theory.

We began shaping the Bread Cooperative Research Agenda, bridging economics, systems research, policy analysis, and on-the-ground action research.

Meet the Solidarity Stack: The next step in scaling solidarity-based financial tooling
An important task within our rebrand was to create an identity that could scale beyond a single product or protocol one that could speak not only to crypto-native builders, but to millions of people navigating real economic uncertainty.
As our work evolved, it became clear that our mission was never just about building tools on-chain, but about building tools for today: tools that help communities organize, support one another, and exercise collective economic agency.
This led us to articulate our mission more clearly.
Bread Cooperative exists to build and maintain solidarity primitives shared, composable tools that communities can use to coordinate their own economic futures. Today, this work takes shape through three core primitives:
Solidarity Fund
The Bread Solidarity Fund is a smart contract on Gnosis that converts xDAI into sDAI. Stakers receive BREAD tokens 1:1 with their collateral, while all generated yield is collectively governed and distributed to member projects via monthly votes.

Stacks
Bread Stacks brings traditional savings circles (ROSCA) onchain through open-source Solidity contracts. Automated distributions, Yield bearing, and borderless participation make collective saving not only accessible but incredibly powerfull by combining it with new DeFi primitves. Safety Net
Inspired by the Broodfonds model, Safety Net enables communities to form autonomous mutual aid insurance pools. Smart contracts automate contributions and payouts, ensuring resilience during sickness, crisis, or unexpected hardship,especially where traditional insurance does not exist.

Looking Forward
We have been at this for a longtime (in crypto years), and we are not going to stop!
In the coming year, we will continue expanding the Solidarity Stack by developing tools that meet people where they are and integrating more deeply with the infrastructure that already works.
We see enormous potential in building alongside the Gnosis ecosystem. Over the past year, our work on Gnosis Chain has shown us how closely aligned our values and trajectories already are. As the Gnosis brand and its applications come together into a more unified experience, this moment feels particularly well suited to deepen that collaboration and to integrate our solidarity stack as part of the everyday financial tools people use on Gnosis.
Rather than building in isolation, we believe the greatest impact emerges when infrastructure, applications, and communities evolve together. Gnosis offers a rare combination of technical maturity and a clear commitment to real-world usability, making it a natural environment for solidarity-driven financial tools to grow and be adopted at scale.
