The faucet went through a lot of changes recently, first it added the need to sign a message to assess you had control of the private key associated with the EOA to fund, which seemed reasonable. But the most recent change now requires an email address from a “major provoder”, hence destroying the possibility to fund an EOA anonymously.
What triggered that change? Should we consider that the days of the good old Gnosis Chain are now over, wiped out by Gnosis the company? Did you consider the implication for the validators who loved the ethos?
Hey @hbs thanks for noticing this and I feel your frustration. These changes happened earlier this week. Unfortunately, prior to that, the faucet was aggressively attacked by bots and it has been very difficult to keep up with them. They were constantly attacking it, and even though the amount of tokens given is very small (0.0005 xDAI per week), they were able to defeat even captchas. Their reach seems to have unfortunately improved a lot now with the use of AI agents, and ultimately, this is the sole reason that motivated the addition of a wallet and email verification. But note that, as mentioned on the page, the email verification is just to prevent abuse and is not used for marketing or anything else. Personally, I wish that better solutions existed to prevent abuse, and if anything new becomes possible in the future, the devs can always update the page.
To fund wallets indirectly, I personally like to use some of the third-party services available like https://gas.zip, for example, which allows you to bridge tiny amounts of gas tokens from other networks (for example, I can send 0.000012 ETH on Arbitrum and get 0.02 xDAI sent to the wallet of my choice). Jumper or Near can also be good solutions for small, indirect deposits of xDAI to new wallets.
