GNO Token App for Governance

GNO is at the heart of Gnosis DAO. Our proposal is to publish a token interface and logic that makes governance and staking information easily accessible to all GNO holders. The token interface will provide an intuitive UX seamlessly across various platforms, including wallets, marketplaces, Telegram, and Farcaster.

MOTIVATION

There are over 20k unique GNO holders, yet only a few participants in governance either through delegation or through direct voting.

Every GNO holder does not visit the governance portal. However, something that every active holder does is that they check out their GNO tokens in their wallet. What if all the information and actions for users are rendered right where the holders use the token the most?

Surface the core functionalities of GNO, staking and governance, as well as critical project information via an app like interface on the tokens themselves allowing holders to stay up to date and execute governance functions in the places they spend their time most (wallets, marketplaces, twitter, farcaster, telegram)

By turning the GNO token into a tapp holders can easily experience the following functions directly through the token in their wallet:

  • View and vote on proposals
  • View the status of delegation
  • Update the delegation

VALUE TO GNOSIS DAO

  • Increased accessibility: By allowing the tokens to be accessible in multiple environments for every holder of GNO, the key functionalities for the token are exposed natively.

  • Increased transparency: Through presenting the information to a broader audience, and also providing a view on how the delegate performed, there is greater transparency to how the utility rights are used.

  • Increased participation: Providing increased accessibility and transparency, will lead to increased participation from the broader community

  • Support next generation of application: Tapps and interactive tokens is an emerging concept, like xNFT and dynamic NFTs. Adoption by educated and active community like Gnosis would help community to experience and build better experiences for using token in Web3.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

Key Deliverables

  • Working GNO tapp that allows GNO holders to do the agreed functionalities from the token. The current candidates for the key functions are:
    • View and vote proposals
    • View the status of delegation
    • Update the delegation
  • GNO Tokenscript file
  • ERC-7738 support for GNO

Beyond the first phase, more functionalities or information can be added to the tapp functionality, considering feedback from the community.

Milestones

  • Milestone 0 (Completed)
    • UI Mock-ups of GNO tapp
    • Proposal submission
  • Milestone 1
    • Finish UI and interaction design
    • Tapp architecture design
    • Infrastructure preparation
    • Timeframe 1 week
    • USD $1.5k
  • Milestone 2
    • Tapp arch design
    • Infrastructure preparation
    • Timeframe 1 week
    • USD $1.5k
  • Milestone 3
    • Tapp testing
    • Tapp deployment
    • Tapp registering (ERC7738)
    • Timeframe 1 week
    • USD $2k

The project can be completed in 3 weeks time frame.

The success of this grant can be measured in two ways.

  • Completion: The project once kicked-off, will be implemented in under 3 weeks. This is a milestone that can be clearly measured.
  • Usage: Once implemented, the usage of GNO tapp can be measured and shared through a dashboard, that can also measure the number of transactions that have been initiated through the tapp.

FUNDING REQUEST

5000 USD funding requested. The budget would be used to partially fund the efforts to create the tapp for GNO, for the team based in Australia. The main efforts include:

  • UI Designing and Interactive design: (40 Hours)
  • Solution Design and Architecture: (20 Hours)
  • TokenScript Development: (40 Hours)
  • Testing: (24 Hours)

I would like to have first a forum where I can follow all discussions that are relevant to the gnosis ecosystem. Imho this will attract more ppl to join. As it seems to me right now: ppl like the way gnosis proceeds but they know most is discussed and decided somewhere else, so they don’t care too much. Having another instance that don’t care about early input of ppl that have a say in the gnosis ecosystem will not change this.

I agree completely. Most GNO holders likely wouldn’t know how to access or navigate this information easily.

Hence embedding all relevant information directly into the GNO token, with links and functions presented through an intuitive app interface, would add significant value. It would make the information instantly accessible to users, raising awareness as a first step toward effective participation. There’s already a strong and growing ecosystem for our ERC-5169 enabled token applications that can deliver this information across multiple platforms (17 wallets, 3 marketplaces, Farcaster, Twitter, Telegram, etc.).

The proposal is just a starting point for creating a token application. We can gather feedback from the Gnosis community and tailor the app to provide what’s most valuable—whether that’s information, links, or utilities, all of which can be integrated.

Personally, I like the idea and the project, and the amount requested is reasonable, so I’m in favor of DAO funding it.

It remains to be seen whether this will really make a difference in terms of deepening the involvement of GNO’s holder in the gnosis ecosystem.

Hey thanks for posting @stj89 this idea has been floated a few times along with dashboards for GIPs or onboarding into Tally, for example. Like @refri said the most important piece to advance is that token holders and community members need to be real stakeholders in collective decision making around the DAO treasury. Everyone should be encouraged to participate in governance no matter who they are or how many tokens they hold. Introducing another surface where governance information is shared will not do much in terms of encouraging participation, in my opinion. I still like your interface and motivation, though!

Thank you so much @john_szczepaniak for taking time to consider the proposal.

I genuinely believe that offering concise and intuitive information across all touchpoints can significantly enhance awareness and, over time, drive increased participation. However, I fully understand your concerns and perspective.

One more question if you are kind enough to answer —if GNO were to have a dedicated Token App, what core functionality or value would you envision it offering?

Here are some examples of what it could be like is we create one token application file for GNO.

I am likewise in favor of this proposal movi g forward. It feels good to be back and having input.
