GIP-131: Should Gnosis DAO continue and update the Gnosis Pay Cashback Programme?

Can you explain in more detail why consistent spending is better for GP? For example, I have €4,000 to spend each month. Why is it better to spend €1,000 each week instead of €4,000 in the first week? The income from card fees remains the same, correct? Doesn’t it just make the graph look nicer?

Weekly limits are annoying and complicated, feels more like gotcha for the users.
How about having an unstaking period of 30 days (during which you don’t accumulate cashback) and a staking period of 30 days (except the first one which is 0, basically how it works right now?) so we can eliminate the constant selling pressure

My proposal to widen adoption is to switch to a monthly cadence with a predictable schedule. Rewards should settle monthly, even if they arrive later, and the eligible spend cap should be set at $2,000 per month. This broadens perceived value, steadies the budget, and simplifies messaging for mainstream users.

Soften the tier curve so newcomers see meaningful cashback early while higher tiers remain reachable. To protect runway, compress thresholds and keep anti-gaming in place. Preserve the +1% OG bonus and the snapshot logic so holding GNO remains genuinely incentivized.

Examples for cashback limit (weekly caps shown; monthly thinking ≈ cap x 4): 1 GNO → 2.5% up to $200 ,8 GNO → 3% up to $600 , etc,1,000 GNO → 8% up to $1,000. Alternating modest and larger step-ups makes progress feel tangible from day one, while larger holders still see meaningful upside within a fairer ceiling.

I’m confident these adjustments will broaden adoption, raise perceived ROI for small balances, strengthen GNO holding, reduce payout concentration, and give the program a longer, more predictable runway.

yeah $80 dollars seems an appropriate reward for holding 1000 GNO

Here are my 2c as a new GP user, but long time crypto card user.

  • Tying holding GNO to cashback is stupid, no neutral user wants to be forced to hold a random token.
  • Better have 1% across the board and be done with it. Or zero, for that matter.
  • No FX and card processor fees is definitely a positive.
  • Zeal app is cumbersome but I’ve seen worse.
  • Customer support is slow/bad… I asked 1 question in the Zeal app and the response after 15 hrs was: “You need to ask gnosis about that” ¯\(ツ)/¯ . I guess you are trying to address this by building a native app.

My suggestion would be to:

  • Have a simple, clear, mobile first app/experience
  • Core DeFi integrations Euler/Aave… to offer credit lines against select collaterals. This would appeal to the DeFi crowd, they like this kind of gimmicks.
  • Create referral program, and pay influencers. Have some 3-month cashback program or similar to attract users. They’ll stick if the experience/app is good. Would me much cheaper than the current cashback proposal.
  • Have something for the remittance crowd, simple UX to send crypto to any bank account.
  • Work with local ambassadors, this can create a good foothold in emerging markets.

i am talking max 1000usd of cashback, youll need to have spent 12500usd to get that in a week

Does this suggestion provide for the interim period, it seems the current 10,000 reward pool will be exhausted in the next payout.

Will this leave current users with weeks of 0% cashback between now and any new implementation? Or will a new provision back-date for this interim period?

I see it as a serious mismanagement from those in charge that this discussion was left to the absolute last minute.

Many crypto cards already offer ~3–4% cashback without requiring token holdings or exposure to volatility. If the entry tiers of Gnosis Pay only reach 1–3%, there’s little reason for an average user to choose it over alternatives. The headline “up to 8–9%” sounds attractive, but in practice this requires a very large GNO commitment that few users are likely to make. Especially if you cannot stake it.

The logarithmic scaling, weekly caps, snapshots, and multiple exclusions make the programme harder to understand and explain. Cashback works best as a simple, easy-to-grasp benefit. Complexity risks alienating the very users this programme is supposed to attract.

Hi, Pury from Picnic here.

Picnic has been closely collaborating with Gnosis Pay to onboard a new wave of users in Brazil — primarily Web2 individuals for whom this card is their very first touchpoint with crypto. Given the current discussion, I’d like to share some data from our launch over the past four months, followed by our perspective and proposal.

Key Metrics from Picnic’s Gnosis Pay Launch

  • Growth: Picnic drove 80% of all new Gnosis Pay users in the past 4 months
  • Engagement: 1,100 active users last week, representing 24% of all active Gnosis Pay users
  • Activity Share: Picnic users accounted for 7% of Gnosis Pay’s total volume and 18% of all transactions last week
  • Adoption: 54% of active users have cashback enabled (!!!)
  • User Sentiment: In surveys, 45% of users cite cashback as a top reason for using the card — ranked #2 overall, right after low fees (including a 3.5% tax arbitrage advantage)

Our Perspective

  • Web2-first audience: Our users have little or no prior crypto exposure. They are not present in this forum — for them, the Picnic + Gnosis Pay card is their gateway into the ecosystem.
  • Trust is fragile: The cashback program is already complex. Any sudden changes in rules or tiers would erode trust we’re working hard to build.
  • Operational risk: Short-notice changes would create product friction, complicate our roadmap, and confuse users.

Our Stance

We are strongly in favor of revamping the cashback program — making it simpler, more attractive to mainstream users, and financially sustainable. But this must be well-communicated and planned in advance.

Our Proposal

  • Extend the current program “as is” for at least 3 more months
    • This ensures continuity for users and gives us room to co-design the next phase responsibly.
  • Begin immediately working on the long-term model, with proper communication and alignment across stakeholders.

If cost optimization is urgent, we would suggest the following to increase budget duration:

  • Stricter enforcement of disqualification/blacklisting rules
  • Reducing weekly cashback limits by 50%
    • From EUR 5,000 / GBP 4,500 / USD 5,500
    • To EUR 2,500 / GBP 2,250 / USD 2,750

What is the cut Picnic is getting from the collaboration with Gnosis Pay? Would Picnic like to contribute some funds for the cashback during the growth phase in LATAM?

Picnic is not making any revenue from the collaboration with Gnosis Pay at this stage. We’ve agreed to revisit commercial terms once we see clear signs of sustainable growth.

As for contributing funds, everything is in principle on the table. But since we’re not capturing any upside yet, it’s hard to justify taking on direct costs at this point. On top of that, Gnosis benefits more directly from the cashback program today and has a far larger treasury to support it, so it makes sense for them to continue subsidizing it in the short term.

Looking ahead, we’re fully aligned on the need for a redesigned cashback model where all actors contribute — whether financially or in other meaningful ways. As I mentioned in my earlier post, we’re eager to participate in that process.

Finally, just to underline: cashback is a core growth lever for us. No other relevant provider in Brazil currently offers dollar accounts and cards with cashback, especially in the travel vertical. It’s a unique differentiator, and we’re committed to helping shape a model that can sustain it long-term.

Make this table shorter/simplier0.1 1 5 10 100gno
5figures only..this table does not include OG nft so will ..should be included. 4% cashback is 10gno+og
Actual table shows 100gno 4%

Replace max spending weekly by max cashback aka 30$ (maximum at 4% for 750usd weekly)

Put max cashback 30$ for everyone even the small spender/low income whatever %cashback and gno holding..users will see this as a potential 30$/week income

Your targeting opening in Indonesia
The rest of new opening also thirld world countries
Your cashback program should target theses low income/low spending users…
90% of people here in this discussion here to milk GP

The cashback programme should reflect the target users your looking to onboard not satisfying current users

Partnership with Picnic as been great growth.

Why did this vote lead to such a big discussion? To be honest, I am very disappointed with the gnosis chain. I obviously have such a good product gnosis pay, but what I see is that gnosis pay attracts a large number of customers, but customers don’t know what to do on this chain. It’s like laying a pipeline in running water, but there is no container ready to carry it.

Haha. I don’t see any tangible upside for Gnosis either, but they are set to fund picnic it seems.

10,000 GNO in cashback how much new GNO have people bought to get this cashback?

Thanks for sharing those numbers/facts (honestly, it should have been provided at the start).
That makes the proposal choices more understandable and further discussion more grounded.

To me, weekly limits are indeed better than monthly regarding the purpose of receiving cashback weekly.
For users, the longer to receive cashback, the less attractive.

Contrary to some comment I read, I am of the opinion that a cashback system should be crafted for both attracting users and keeping the existing base.

In the end, that changed my view on the proposal and I find the gradation proposed quite sensible (little to tweak) but it should be marketed more simply.

Hello, very new user here, just few weeks.

Just wanted to say, that cashback didn’t draw me to pick Gnosis Pay as my only crypto card from this list: https://cryptonoshi.com/product-category/crypto-cards/
Cashback was nice addon, as I considered it only as “nice to have”. What I was looking at were fees, EUR cards and ease of transfering crypto to card.

Before I signed up I read most of Gnosis Pay documentation, since I needed to make sure I could transfer USDC to EURe with good exchange rate.

So maybe, continue cashback in some form (saw good suggestions here like only for new user for first 3-6 months), but if you have it, do it very good or great. Not half baked.

250$ weekly limit is very small. If you will use weekly limit (I like monthly better), then at least 500$ limit for 1GNO tier.

But as I said, if you cancel cashback I still won’t leave. What matter most to me are fees.

  1. Fee for top up - this is 0 from Gnosis side, but I noticed USDC / EURe exchange rate is very bad when try to transfer lets say 2000 USDC to EURe via Jumper. For smaller amount up to 500USDC it’s usually stable. Maybe increasing liquidity here should also be one of improvements.
  2. FX fee
  3. ATM fee

After that, what’s important for me are

  1. Virtual card
  2. Maybe “use once” cards in Revolut style
  3. Allowing “fund hold” for use with hotels, self service gas stations, rental cars etc…
  4. Mobile app and other ease of use improvements

Best regards

EDIT: Also, a question for people running Gnosis Pay. Why is everything in USD (limits, revenue etc.) when you are basically 99% EUR area?

The new weakly spending limits are way to low. Guess I will have to change the card I use mid week, and I will definitely not use for any bigger purchases like hotel reservation, plane tickets etc.
For extending the reach to more ppl you should make it possible for users, who do not know how to use a wallet, to still use the GnosisPay and get a cashback. With using just an email and their IBAN to top up and then make some learning material for them to use web3 and aave platform…

Focusing on mainstream users should be the foundation of the program, and I fully agree with your message. We should double down on a phased, predictable scale: over the long term—especially for people with little or no prior exposure to crypto—trust and clarity are what drive adoption in a space that still feels niche. We need to be attractive from day one.

Abrupt changes at this stage of expansion can erode credibility, the most valuable asset of a new product. Keeping the cashback structure stable is therefore essential for staged growth. If optimization is needed, I’d prefer lowering the cap rather than risking trust or diminishing appeal for new users. As a practical step, let’s migrate to a biweekly cadence (every two weeks) with a biweekly spend cap to preserve predictability, simplify communication, and extend runway.

Reducing the max weekly cashback is also a nice addition.

It is mandatory to change the question to add this:

Should Gnosis DAO continue and update the Gnosis Pay Cashback Programme WITH THIS NEW CONDITIONS?

People are saying YES to continuing NO to weekly cuts
